it feels like family
Elliott Kinney
Jared Galloway
-
Combine one part beach bum, two parts cowboy, and a vintage three-piece suit and you’ve got Elliott Kinney. After moving to Richmond in need of a haircut and a job, Elliot asked Jacky Flav how he liked barbering, “I make people feel good and I laugh a lot.” He started an apprenticeship the following week. Even though he traded the beach for the city, Elliot still loves spending a day on the water alongside a strong margarita and a fishing rod. @rvacitybarber

When the 9-5 weekday grind became true drudgery, Jared looked around for something else to do and barbering kept coming up to the top of the list. In 2013, he started barber school and cut hair out of his home until High Point opened. The heart of Jared’s passion for barbering is in working with his hands at a craft while enjoying the company of good friends. However, his taste in music usually gets vetoed by High Point's MVDJ, Jackson Flavor. Jared and his wife, Lauryn, have two kids, McKinley and Rosalie, and when he’s not here he’s spending time with them or enjoying the great outdoors.

Kyle Robinson
-
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Isaac found his way to Richmond in 2011 to attend VCU. From that moment he fell in love with the city and never left. A former client now turned employee, he always had an interest in cutting hair and credits his experiences at High Point with helping that interest grow. In 2019 Isaac decided it was time for a career change and that barbering was the way to go; thus far he’s been having a blast. There’s a ton of aspects about cutting hair and working in the shop that he appreciates, but “when you boil it down, we get to make people look good and feel good (sometimes while listening to South of Heaven) and I think that kicks ass.” @hullycuts
-
Originally a native of Utah, Kyle knew Richmond was home when he came to visit back in 2014 and then "never left," which is comparable to his tenure at High Point: "Elliott had been cutting my hair for years. I knew it was my spot form the minute I walked through the Meadow Street front door." Joining a long line of former-clients-turned-current-employees, Kyle manages the West End Shop where you can find him hanging with his dog, Archie, as well as the rest of the HP crew. An avid collector of records, sneakers, and comics, you can catch him enjoying the Richmond dining scene when he's not ensuring everyone has the best experience possible when they walk through the door.
Ty
Josh
-
Originally born in Mount Vernon, NY, Ty made his way to Virginia where he completed his school age years, then returned to where it all began, working the front desk at a notable New York City based barbershop in his early 20's. Fast forward to Ty making his triumphant return to Virginia, he was looking for new employment and saw a High Point ad looking for new front desk personell. Having already cut his teeth at the position in NY, he felt it would be a good fit. Ty's favorite part of the shop is "Being able to show up as myself and being surrounded by creative energy." Outside of work Ty spends his time enjoying photography and floral work, as well as spending time with his spouse, Leon, and their dog, Trunks.

Josh made the journey from Woodbridge down to Richmond for college almost 20 years ago and never left. He claims to have learned about High Point from asking people in the city with great haircuts where they got it and consistently receiving "High Point" as the answer. Looking back, he recalls being 18 years old with no real prospects of direction but having a chat with his regular barber about where he wanted to go in life, it was then she suggested barbering to him, and he credits that with saving his life. His favorite part about all of this is that his job "is to make people happy, and I happen to like making people happy. It's an incredibly low stress job, plus I get to work with a bunch of characters." Outside of cutting Josh enjoys reading, writing, video games, cooking, hiking, and weightlifting, as well as spending time with his girlfriend and 3 cats.
Chris Curry
JR
-
Growing up, the barber was the “plug” in Chris’s community and he always wanted to be that guy. After a string of odd jobs, he finally answered the calling. After a decade in the industry, Chris is all about the craft of the haircut and prefers to snip along to some jazz music. Beyond the chair, Chris is also passionate about creating and sewing custom menswear.

Before bringing his skills to High Point, J.R. was working as a tour manager for musicians on the road. While getting a haircut at High Point a month after opening, he and Jack realized they were from adjoining towns on Long Island. The connection turned into a friendship and eventually a job offer to run the front of the house. After holding down the business side of things for three years, he decided he'd like to step behind the chair in the hopes of continuing the tradition of excellent service that he watched his peers provide during that time. When he’s not behind chair he’s enjoying Richmond’s food scene, reading, going to shows, and cheering for the greatest organization in all of sports, The New York Yankees. @jr_cuts_hair
Sarah
Bobby Yates
-
A native of North Carolina, Sarah enjoys hiking, playing soccer, listening to punk and metal, all things Disney, and dogs of all kinds. You can currently find her running the front desk at Scott’s Addition. Sarah found her way to High Point through her previous work experience and love of the industry but, more importantly, “there was a special place in my heart for all of the dum dums I already knew that worked here.”

Having grown up in Amelia, Richmond always existed in Bobby’s periphery. In 2006 he finally made the jump, moved downtown, and threw himself head first into the food service scene, starting out as a host and working his way up to Restaurant Management very quickly. Growing up in “the country,” as he calls it, barbers were few and far between, let alone good ones. “You either pay someone for a bad haircut, or cut your own hair. I come from an artistic family, so I started cutting my own, and my best friend’s hair. A whole lot of bad haircuts were given back then!” However, those bad haircut days are far behind him: almost 15 years later Bobby says, “My favorite part of working for High Point is that I get so many different barbers with individual styles to learn from. I worked at other barber shops and it was always viewed as competition. As I’m growing in my career I’m not only cutting hair, but cutting hair with a purpose, and adding my own artistic style.” In his downtime you can find Bobby embarking on a new wood burning project, playing flag football, disc golf, pool, or, most importantly, yelling at the Green Bay Packers on TV.
Jeff Rider
Billy McIntyre
-
Born just a little ways north in Baltimore, Maryland, Jeff found his way down to Richmond in elementary school when his father took a job at Franco’s in Lakeside. After getting his hair cut by Foster on High Point’s second day of being open, he became an every two week client for years, before crossing over to the haircutting side of things. Jeff’s passion is fueled by his desire to make other clients feel as welcome as he did when he first set foot in the shop, and the feeling he gets from helping people look and feel amazing and the confidence boost that comes along with a new haircut. A rabid Ravens and Manchester United fan, Jeff spends his time outside the shop bartending at the Village, perfecting the art of hamburger tasting, and playing soccer. @hairchefjeff

Hailing from California, Billy, his wife, their son, two dogs, and a cat were “looking for a little more elbow room” and settled on Richmond. Having been introduced to High Point through a friend, once it was decided they were making the journey east Billy reached out and it was a no-brainer to offer him a position. Back in 2008 when the state of the market was questionable at best, Billy decided to eschew his degree and get back to what he had been passionate about since his teenage years, and all through college: cutting hair. Billy views every head and haircut as a puzzle, couple that with his desire to meet new people and hear their stories, and he has found himself in the perfect place here in the barbershop.
Tia Wiley
Brandon Gregory
-
Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Tia started out in cosmetology but quickly found her niche in barbering. While looking for a new place to land Tia wanted an environment where "I didn't feel like I had to put on a face and could 100% be myself... and stumbled across High Point." When it comes to how she views her craft and why it's important, Tia had this to say: "I love making people feel good about themselves. A good haircut, beard trim, and style can change someone's look so drastically that they start to see the world in a different light." Outside of the shop you can catch Tia embarking on her newfound love of rollerskating, as well as spending time with her better half, Landon, and two children, Leia and Leo. Lastly, for any of your small batch candles and other offerings, check out Muva Earth LLC, of which Tia is the owner and operator.

Born in Kentucky, Brandon found his way to Richmond via St. Louis, Missouri specifically to end up here at High Point. Feeling a sense of wanting to be creative and work with his hands, Brandon found that barbering is "a community of good work and good people for the most part." His favorite aspect of being a part of that community? "Changing people's outlook on hair. Showing someone that it's not just a haircut but a piece of themselves. Shop life is sick because you get to work with some of the most supportive people." When not behind the chair you'll find him enjoying horror films and anime, as well as playing guitar and making music on the side.
Vinnie Sabba
Patrick O’Meara
-
"I'm from the greatest place in the world, the Jersey Shore." However, Vinnie's been visiting Richmond since he was 15, and even made the choice to move here and finish his college degree at VCU. Having a long standing history of hanging out in the city, Vinnie was friendly with some of the owners and original HP employees. Upon reaching what felt like a crossroads in his career back in 2019, Vinnie decided to step away from what he was doing previously and give barbering a chance. "To make someone feel more confident with their appearance while laughing with your friends and goofing off in the shop never really felt like 'work' for me, and that was the ideal situation I was looking for." A lover of New York Jets football, swimming in the ocean ("You won't catch me in the river), betting on sports, riding bikes to the boardwalk, and watching good movies with the homies, Vinnie would like to give a final shout out to Papa V's, PEC's, and party waves.

After spending some time in the army, Patrick began taking classes at VCU. When he expressed an interest in barbering one day to Foster and Jack, they encouraged him to give it a try. Shortly after that he enrolled in barber school, which he says is one of the best decisions he’s ever made. Starting as an apprentice, Patrick has worked his way up at High Point and continues to improve his craft. He prefers punk and hardcore when he’s cutting and when he’s not - you’ll find him maintaining his lawn.
Scott Kenney
Elijah Elliot
-
A VCU alum, Scott set off after graduation to tour the U.S., Canada and Europe with bands playing the guitar for several years. Now back in his hometown, he runs our front desk over at Meadow Street, as well as his own record label, when he’s not playing hockey, the guitar, or watching the Washington Capitals.
-
With a deep aversion to sitting behind a desk, Elijah found cutting hair to be a refreshing alternative and was drawn to the vibe and people at High Point. When he’s not behind the chair you’ll find him outside - usually skating or in the mountains snowboarding. @elijah.elliott
Jacky Flav
David Foster
-
With a barber pole tattoo on his throat, saying Jacky Flav has passion for the industry is a bit of an understatement. He brings that same level of passion to most aspects of life, including his love for music and his devotion to clients. It’s not uncommon to find Jacky Flav opening up the shop early to accommodate tough schedules or inviting his last client of the day to dinner and drinks. When he’s not rocking out to Eddie Vedder or sharing stories about his American Bulldog Delores, he lives to make you laugh. @jackyflav
-
As a barber, David Foster found a way to combine his three favorite things every day: drinking coffee, talking about sports, and getting his hair cut. Before finding a permanent home in Richmond, he spent the majority of his twenties traveling the world in a hardcore punk band: playing shows on boats in Paris and dive bars in New Zealand. He books the United Blood Festival every year, bleeds Philadelphia Eagle green, and spends too much money on late night snacks with his wife Kayla. @dnfoster24

A veteran, former bartender and now career barber, this Virginia Beach native went across the country to LA to complete barber school. After spending time at a barbershop in Virginia Beach, he was drawn to the environment at High Point and moved to Richmond in 2018. Here he’s all about having fun, talking smack and helping people feel good about themselves. Otherwise he’s out exploring Richmond, looking for new places to eat and see live music.

Growing up in Virginia Beach, Erick was drawn to three things: collecting shoes, DJing, and cutting hair. After saving up enough money working at a shoe store, Erick bought his first set of turn tables and has been making heads pop since 2006 under his alias DJ El Capone. Obviously inspired by gangster movies (his last name is pronounced Capone), Erick was always drawn to the barbershop scenes in movies and was determined to find his own place to get a straight razor shave. He found it at Toppers Barber Shop in Virginia Beach, where he eventually began an apprenticeship under Miss Linda. Erick began making frequent trips to Richmond when he and his wife started dating, and eventually had to find his own barber here. Enter, David Foster. This relationship turned into a job opportunity and Erick moved to Richmond, bringing his beats and gangster-inspired hair cuts with him. Erick and his wife have two sons, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Lord Quasimoto (but you can call him Quasi), and two orange tabbies. Catch him behind the turntables every 3rd Thursday at The Veil Brewing. @cutsbycapone
Patrick Oborn

Pat found his way to Richmond after realizing he’d like to leave the greyness of Ohio behind and have a fresh start and maybe even some sunshine. Pat knew of High Point before moving to the city thanks to a friend in barber school showing him our Instagram page, where he realized he loved the layout and the vibe being put out. After watching one of his childhood friends become a barber, he was looking for an alternative to college and decided this was the best path for him. With a love for the old school feeling of using a straight razor, Pat also enjoys the fact that he gets to meet new and amazing people every day in the shop. When not cutting hair you can find him curating his sneaker collection, cheering for the Cleveland Browns, in the gym, or hanging with his wife Emma and their Doberman, Omen.
Ethan Uhrig
-
As a Richmond native, Ethan’s exposure to High Point predates its existence as Ethan initially got his haircut by owner David Foster at his previous place of employment; then followed him over to his new endeavor, as a client. Fast forward a few years, and three shops, later, and Ethan is now employed as an apprentice at our West End location. Ethan’s interest in barbering was sparked during the pandemic when he initially started cutting his own hair, and then his friend’s. According to Ethan his favorite part of the culture here is “seeing client’s faces light up when you give them a really solid haircut. I love that the shop is a place where you can leave your problems at the door and just enjoy yourself.”
Rashod Jackson
-
Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Rashod was aware of High Point's existence from its inception thanks to his friendship with owners Foster and Darren. From an early age Rashod knew he wanted to be in a barbershop environment and when High Point came along he finally saw the realization of that possibility. A big fan of bantering and making people feel good, feel free to come have a seat in his chair to have a chat and leave looking, and feeling, good.
